No doubt the American "Health Care" system is a total non-starter
.."E R" spawned no-end of British hospital dramas..(still got the best theme tune)..caught an episode the other day (never watched it before), and they've got Mikelti Phifer , with Danny Glover turning up as his dad, Maura Tierney must be the longest serving cast member(?)...Anyway...
back to "Sicko"..personally i had my ideas about the U.S health system confirmed with "Bringing out the Dead" (Ha Ha)( the last decent film that Nic Cage did?)..and the last Scorsese film that i made a bee-line for...
back to Michael Moore
"Bowling for Columbine" is one of my favourites...and surely Michael would have applauded "Who Killed the Electric Car" , a sort of "i told you so" update of "Roger and Me", that feeds directly into the "Global Warming/Energy debate", with old "Chimp features" himself fronting the Oil companies next monopoly of the , "available some time never", Hydrogen car , or is that bloke dead now?...Roger Smith i mean...Bush is still U.S President , can you believe it..at least we've got rid of that grinning ARSE Blair now... ANYWAY..the point about "Sicko" that i wanted to make is that, ok the U.S. system is terrible..non-existent..other countries , including Britain do it better... BUT , Moore shows a VERY rosy view of the N.H.S .. this week is a very good example of the crisis that is always ready to blow in our health service.. It's constantly "under review/reform" a total "political football".. "Private Finance Initiatives" make Government spending levels look good, but saddle local authorities with massive debts for years, while the private companies that build New Hospitals get money loaned at rock bottom rates..Government led initiatives, "targets" are constantly interfering with the delivery of care..and mis-management of resources seems never ending.. Just today ,through administrative mis-management ,30,000 new doctors have ALL started work , in new posts, at the same time !! (cue "don't get ill tomorrow" headlines) This after a disasterous on-line job applications system that had NO security, and leaked personal details of all the applicants ,including sexual orientation!... and also led to badly placed applicants, the highest achievers inexplicably did not get jobs , some are having to move abroad to find appropriate posts..the shortfall in doctors and nurses that we had in the last ten years got filled by doctors and nurses from abroad..NOW that we have enough new graduate doctors and nurses , there aren't enough posts for them!!! Overall we will muddle through in the British way..but...
I suppose i'm just trying to console Americans who see the awfulness of their health care laid bare by "Sicko" , with examples of the MASSIVE resources that we waste on the "black hole" that the N.H.S has become...
Cheers Chris Morrell
P.S ..currently enjoying series three of "The Wire", on postal rental DVD..i was tempted to buy it today,( as "Lovefilm".com keep messing up the disc order), but it was £25, needed new shoes, and didnt have my credit card with me(!)..one thing, it has taken me a while to get into the Neville Brothers version of the theme..i loved Tom Waits..ta ta ...
