SIFF Sighting: THE ONE I LOVE (Romantic Comedy; USA)

Ethan (Mark Duplass) and Sophie (Elisabeth Moss) are a married couple going through a rough patch.

Though Ethan gives re-igniting their flame a college try, Sophie still isn't past their troubles, so they agree to couples' therapy.

Their shrink (Ted Danson, perfect for the part) assigns them a weekend away to work on their issues and that's when things start to get weird.

I can't go any further without completely spoiling the film, so I'll just say this is hilarious, thought-provoking, confusing, charming and odd. First-time screenwriter Justin Lader does an incredible job of entertaining while floating the big lingering questions, and all the while making the audience hungry for bacon.

I can't wait until this is released in theaters. I'll be first in line to see it again.

THE ONE I LOVE screened at the 40th Seattle International Film Festival.

SIFF Sighting: LOVE IS IN THE AIR (romance; France)

Julie (Ludivine Sagnier) is a woman living in New York, headed home to France to marry her boyfriend, who is a respected lawyer.

Antoine (Nicolas Bedos) is a mess—traipsing through life with one woman after another, none satisfying him for more than two weeks.

As often happens in romantic comedies, our two stars here have a "meet cute," and this time it's on an airplane in the seats right next to one another.

They both discover (Julie in horror; Antoine in delight) who they're seated with and we quickly learn they were longtime loves before Antoine did something horrible to wreck it all.

Through glasses of champagne and an abundance of turbulence, they recount their relationship for those within earshot and remember why they parted.

As often happens, the memories recalled make the mood bittersweet and the two must contemplate if they'll go their separate ways once the plane lands, or try one more time to be a successful couple.

Sagnier's manner is reminiscent of early Meg Ryan performances; Bedos nails his role as a careless playboy effortlessly, but what stops this film from being as charming as it wants to be are the continued formulaic scenarios.

The ending also risks leaving a bad taste in the mouth. Anyone who has ever had another person sabotage them for selfish reasons may not appreciate the resolution here.

The classic French Kiss would probably be a better option for those seeking a happily ever after rom com.

SIFF Sighting: A CHECKOUT GIRL'S BIG ADVENTURES (Romantic Comedy, France)

Solweig (Déborah François) was unable to pursue her dream of being a teacher because her father had an accident that left him in a coma. Faced with the reality that he may never wake up, she takes a job as a checkout girl to support herself and her ten-year-old brother.

To vent her frustrations about how she's treated by her superiors and the customers, she starts an anonymous blog, which becomes nationally known and prompts her employer to conduct a witch hunt to find the writer. Meanwhile, Solweig is busy accidentally falling in love with a stranger who came to her rescue on a cold, snowy night.

In this lighthearted comedy, which is based on a memoir, we experience a slice of life with folks we can't help but know—grocery store clerks. They work hard each day doing the same thing over and over again and frankly aren't treated so well. Toss in the added twist of an ill family member and the responsibility of caring for another and we have a very sympathetic situation.

Our heroine here keeps a chin up despite the drama and keeps us rooting for her in life and love.

Though terribly predictable and formulaic, the characters are very well-drawn (and for the most part, likeable) and the story is a sweet one to witness.

SIFF Sighting: LIBERAL ARTS (Comedy, USA)

Jesse (Josh Radnor), 35, travels to his alma mater to speak at a retirement ceremony for one of his beloved professors and meets 19-year-old Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen). They develop a 'connection' and Jesse has to determine whether or not the risks of being with her outweigh the joy.

The all-star cast, featuring Richard Jenkins, Allison Janney and Zac Efron are all wonderful, as are the leads in this charming 'what if' about morality.

SIFF Sighting: LOVELY LONELINESS (romantic comedy; Argentina)

Lovely_Loneliness_07

It's good to know that the roles and rituals of grieving single women are universal. That American women aren't the only ones who stay up late rearranging furniture to make the apartment look different without his things there, and that it's okay to sob when we lock ourselves out of our homes and realize there's no one to let us in.

It's also interesting to learn that all of us "single ladies" must be neurotic, because our star player in this film, Soledad (Inés Efron) makes Bridget Jones look borderline balanced.

We meet the hypochondriac heroine after she has broken up with Nico. She is clearly devastated and begins worrying about her own blood pressure, which causes her to buy a velcro contraption to wear around her arm so she can check it compulsively. She also orders her sandwiches in a complicated way, elects to relieve herself elsewhere instead of having her plumbing fixed, and makes regular visits to the doctor for various (most likely fabricated) ailments.

Basically, she's a pain in the ass.

But that doesn't stop her from being endearing. Her smile lights up a room, her eye for décor makes her good at her job, and her quirky issues (mostly medical) are so sincere you can forgive her for having them.

And that's exactly what Nico 2 (Fabian Vena) does.

After swearing off men for two to three years (because the pain and suffering of loss is too unbearable), she reluctantly agrees to a dinner with architect Nico (having just had her heart stomped on by musician Nico), even though she doesn't "eat much at night." Despite a dizzy spell at the table and a very random conversation, Nico decides that her cuteness is worth it and continues to see her.

He fixes her toilet, buys her breakfast after a night of lovemaking, dismisses her offhand comments and turns out to be a very stable force in her life. And that's just what's wrong with the movie.

Nico 2 comes into her life during a hard time, Nico 1 tries to contact her a few times, but the two never meet and barely any conflict is noted between any of the them, save for the original breakup. That, tossed in with her mom getting a boob job and her dad marrying someone with a similar hobby to Soledad's—both for no apparent reason—doesn't add up to much.

The actors are appealing, especially Efron, but their inherent charm is not enough to carry this somewhat pointless film.
